Mt. Jefferson is a 1,600′ towering mountain looming over the beautiful country town of West Jefferson, North Carolina. Just a few miles down Highway 16 is the Blue Ridge Parkway, and just a few miles down the parkway is this overlook. It provides a stunning look at the towering mountain, which also plays host to the Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area (sometimes referred to as Mt. Jefferson State Park).
This overlook is just a small area with a handful of parking spaces on the west side of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Milepost 268, about 7 miles from the intersection with Highway 16. This is a popular access point for the Blue Ridge Parkway from local points in Western North Carolina and portions of Southwest Virginia, just about an hour drive from places like Marion, Virginia and Mountain City, Tennessee.
This is an excellent vantage point to see the towering Mt. Jefferson before, potentially, heading up Highway 16 to visit the sleepy little country town West Jefferson at the base of the mountain. West Jefferson is a town full of locally-owned restaurants, cafes, shops, and outdoor recreation.
