I have always been fascinated with the power of lightning streaking across a dark sky, soon to be followed by a bellow of thunder. Today that fascination has manifested itself as a bit of an obsession to capture amazing photos of the power of nature. This year I bought a new toy that made all the difference in the world in helping me capture the best photos of lightning possible.

This year I was armed with my new Ubertronix Strike Finder Pro, a nifty little device that attaches to my Nikon DSLR and triggers the camera when the infrared sensor detects a lightning strike. Finally! No more wasting hundreds, if not thousands, of shutter clicks just to capture a single photo of lighting. Or, even worse, missing the photo entirely while the camera is dealing with a full memory buffer.

I spent my summer traveling across coastal North Carolina and South Carolina, tracking down storms, and capturing photos as frequently as possible. Here are some of my favorites from the year. Next year I have big plans to do even more!

Oak Island, NC

This was my first photo of lightning during the 2016 season, standing out on a beach, completely exposed. Don’t do this.

This storm approached Huntington Beach State Park quickly, surprising most people still on the beach.

I spent an afternoon at Myrtle Beach State Park as one storm after another passed through, capturing photos like this.

Lightning at Assateague Island National Seashore

This storm at Assateague Island National Seashore was one of the most impressive I had ever seen.

How lucky can a guy get? While visiting Assateague Island National Seashore I managed to capture a photo of lightning streaking across the sky as one of the infamous wild ponies grazed in a field!
