The General William T. Sherman Memorial sits in a little plaza adjacent to the White House, right off 15th Street NW. This makes it a popular destination for tourists wandering through the area and an easy one to find. It’s also the location for meetings and parties so on occasion you’ll find secrete service agents blocking the area off (true story).

A large base with the bronze statue on top.

It’s easy to find and access this small memorial, located inside Alexander Hamilton Plaza in front of the Department of Treasury. But the day I tried to visit I found an obstacle in my way: a large, burly secret service agent, who told me the plaza was reserved for a private party. I have no idea who was invited to this party, but a few dozen guests with passes around their necks and business attire were allowed through the gate. But that’s the nice thing about this memorial: you can still enjoy it from a distance.

While a sloping sidewalk leads up to and around the memorial, there are a few steps to cross to each the base of the pedestal. But if you’re limited to a wheelchair, you can still enjoy the sight of the memorial from the perimeter. During the warmer months a beautiful array of flowers decorate the landscaping around the pedestal, surrounding a few benches for people to take the load off their feet for a few minutes. It’s a nice place to visit while on your way to the White House, but not much more of a stop than a few minutes.

There are 100s of statues, memorials and whatnot in Lee;s name. And his is one of US history;s biggest losers. Statues of Sherman need to be erected all over the south to remind those uppity heritage folks what actually happened (psst, Lee surrendered and the South lost)
